Who is a Hero?
Our fascinations, what are they? Nature? The Seven Wonders of the World? The opposite sex? The arts? Actually we all have one innate fasciation that overlooks them all. Heroes! The guys and gals in capes that soar in the heavens and stop burning buildings, and save innocent kitty’s out of trees. Yet who truly is a hero? The dictionary defines one as “a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble quality.” However, we are looking for the definition of who is a hero for us. Batman? No, he may be a DC hero, but he is not what comes to mind. The punisher? Still not what I have in mind. Thor? Close, his long blond hair and his movies in the marvel cinematic universe are cool, but not what I am seeking. So…Who is a hero? The answer may shock you…
YOU ARE! Each and every one of you brilliant students here at (High school’s name) are a hero. Now, you are currently questioning me as to why I would think that. Well you are right, and if you pay attention then you will be rewarded with knowledge that will change your life and the lives of those you love!
First of all, when is it that I am a hero? Is it each time you get an A+ on your tests? No! The times when you are a hero are the times that count those “two or three moments” are the ones that will make you into a true hero. Each time that you study, give the extra effort, that extra push, burning the midnight oil and put in those sleepless nights for the science majors, or those exhausting calculations for the business majors, or even those head scratching, arm cramping essays written by each and every one of you. That…is when you are a hero.
Second, why are you a hero? Easy my presence here today is not to enlist you for the “Avengers initiative”, but to enlighten you on how much of a hero you all are. The future of this nation rides on the shoulders of heroes that put in the effort to become tomorrow’s doctors, or lawyers, or engineers, or astronauts, or physicists, or professors, or productive members of society. That is why you are a hero, to build society by your countless contributions that you will make with your many talents or “superpowers” that are given to you to help humankind!
Long story short, when you are faced with future endeavors, keep in mind two things. The first: Live up to my standards of who I think you are…Heroes! The second: Live your life for those that you, as a hero, protect. That is what truly makes a hero, self-sacrifice. With these humble words I leave you to save the world of tomorrow, today!
